Cat games

I swear, if I didn't know Sonya had been fixed, I would swear that she's in heat. All day long, mew, mew, mew at the door begging to go out. It's beautiful weather and she knows it. She's a child of nature and I'm cruelly refusing to allow her to go be one with the outdoors. Of course, she usually finds something to be terrified of within ten minutes of going outside, but she never remembers that. She just remembers the patch of catnip in the backyard that's starting to come up again. Trying to leave the house these days is like playing a particularly futile video game: I open the door and a cat escapes. I chase the cat down, open the door to shove it inside and another cat runs out as I place the first cat in. Repeat until I'm very late for work.

Of course, Sonya _was_ fixed, unless the Humane Society decided to play a cruel joke on us and just pretend to do the surgery by drugging her and shaving her belly, but I doubt it.

Meanwhile, the kitchen is the eternal cat playground. We went to Costco a few weeks ago, where they pack all of your groceries in boxes. The box we got from that visit is still in the kitchen because it's perfectly cat sized. They can jump in and either sit up straight and peer out the top or hide at the bottom.

And then last week the paper bag joined the box on the kitchen floor (some would refer to this as slovenly housekeeping, but I prefer to look at it in a more holistic manner as stimulating the cats' creative potential). The paper bag tends to get cats slinking in and out of it, crouching completely hidden inside while still being able to see out. And of course it creates endless games of Paper Bag.

Here's a sample game: Olwen goes into bag. Sonya hears rustling and starts poking at bag. Eventually, Sonya gets excited and either actually jumps on bag or sticks her head in. Fed up, Olwen leaps out of bag at Sonya to give her a good whap. Olwen then slinks back into bag, skulking inside so I can only see her glowing eyes against the darkness. Sonya then jumps into the box, which is right next to the bag. I then lay bets to see how long it will be until Sonya jumps out of the box directly onto Olwen. As it turns out, 1.2 minutes. Olwen then deals with Sonya as firmly as possible and goes back into the bag. She then decides to start rolling over and the bag rolls with her, across the kitchen floor. Intrigued, Sonya follows and the eternal cycle repeats yet again.

Who needs tv when you have cats?
