The nineteen month update
Jan. 26th, 2007 10:35 pmis probably not happening. For one thing, I can't find the usb cord for the camera, so the few pictures we took this month are trapped on the camera. And truth be told, we were just too darn busy this month to pay a lot of attention to our child's development, and I'm so tired right now that I can't remember what I have noticed.
But here are some observations:
-K's walking has become quite accomplished (and speedy). She doesn't fall often, she can walk backwards and she has taken to walking around with her arms behind her back, which means she doesn't need to hold her arms out for balance any more. She is also accomplished at going both up and down the stairs, but I have put the kibosh on any real stair climbing for the immediate future. She may have the physical skills, but she doesn't have any real judgment, and she keeps trying to climb while carrying things, which is a precarious proposition at best.
-She loves to kiss - us, the cats, her toys, pictures in her books. The other day, she was sitting on her rocking horse and periodically leaning down to kiss its cheek. She blows big dramatic kisses at us from her crib or across the room. She associates blowing kisses with going to bed (we started this by blowing her kisses after we put her down in her crib), and now whenever anyone says "Good night," even when we're just reading a book, she blows a kiss.
-She has taken to pulling her arms inside her sleepsack and taking her clothes off under it. We also found the safety pin popped open one morning this week, although that hasn't been repeated.
-We have a couple wicker baskets that were inaccessible to her at our old house but are now just sitting on the floor, and she has taken to carrying them around, filled with her toys and cat toys (which are pretty much interchangeable these days. What's a little sharing of the catnip mice between friends?). She also adores pushing things around, and has adopted a cheap umbrella stroller as a favored toy.
-When she's happy or excited, she does an adorable little foot-stomping dance.
-When we get to the part in Good Night Gorilla where the zookeeper's wife discovers all of the animals in her bedroom, K makes a surprised face just like the zookeeper's wife
Now that we've stayed in one place for a whole two weeks now, she's settled down pretty quickly into a pretty good-natured state. It helps that I've been religious about reading her signs when it comes to needing food or sleep, but she's also just in a good phase right now, not too needy or whiny and happy to spend a lot of time playing independently. I hope this lasts for a while.
