January books
Feb. 1st, 2007 10:51 pmAdult books:
Shatterglass by Tamora Pierce
The Will of the Empress by Tamora Pierce
This is actually a continuation of a project I started in December, when I realized the only Pierce books I hadn't read were her Circle Opens quartet, and that it had been 7 years since I read the first Circle quartet. So I decided to start over from the beginning and read all 8 books, then Will which finished the series. I enjoyed it overall, although Pierce's tendency to be a bit Mary-Sueish with her main characters is at its worst in this series. After a while, the characters were all so powerful I just couldn't worry about them since it was clear there wasn't anything around more powerful than they were. But I still enjoyed the read.
The Sharing Knife: Beguilement by Lois McMaster Bujold
A Civil Campaign by Lois McMaster Bujold
Shards of Honor by Lois McMaster Bujold
We got Beguilement as a mutual Christmas present to each other, and once I was done with it I really wanted to read more Bujold. I had only read the Chalion books up to that point and I would have been happy to reread them, but the moving van hadn't arrived at that point. So I went to the library and the two Bujold they had were Campaign and Cordelia's Honor, so I got them both out (the adult fiction section of this library is tiny, but thankfully we can get any book in the citywide library system delivered to us). I'm about to start Barrayar, the second half of Cordelia's Honor and recently got Young Miles on interlibrary loan. To say I'm hooked is an understatement. I have four other books from the library and I'm not sure if I'm going to be able to bring myself to read them if there's more Bujold to be had.
Children's books (because I'd like to keep track of what we were reading for posterity):
Olivia Saves the Circus by Ian Falconer
Olivia Forms a Band by Ian Falconer
Olivia and the Missing Toy by Ian Falconer
Olivia Counts by Ian Falconer
As you can see, the Olivia books are a big hit around here. We own the first one, but when I found the next three and an Olivia board book at the library, I couldn't resist.
Madeline by Ludwig Bemelman
K absolutely refuses to let me read this book to her. I thought it was ideal when I got it out of the library because of the large pictures and short text, but every time I try to read it she says "Noooo" and pushes it firmly away. I finally managed to read it to her when she was in the bathtub and too distracted by splashing to protest. I guess we'll try again in a few months.
Those are the new books; I can't possibly remember every book we read, but here are some of the favorites this month:
Dinosaur's Binkit by Sandra Boynton - K adores this one. She's realized that every time a flap is pulled back, the dinosaur is yelling something, so when she pulls the flaps back, she babbles loudly in imitation of us.
Doggies by Sandra Boynton
Horns to Toes by Sandra Boynton
I am a Bunny by Richard Scarry
Babies by Gyo Fujikawa
Good night Gorilla by Peggy Rathman
Pile of Puppies by Barbara Leonard Gibson
The Pigeon has Feelings Too by Mo Willems
Don't Let the Pigeon Stay Up Late by Mo Willems
