Moving on up

There are basically three types of houses in our part of the city: two story row houses with one car garages and basements (our current house), two story twin houses with one car garages and basements and one story twin ranches with one car garages and basements. There are also various styles of single houses, but for the most part when this part of the city was being built up in the fifties and sixties, they specialized in big flat-roofed boxes with identical floor plans. Apparently the builders were very fond of right angles.
Today, we looked at two twin ranches and I was very pleased. They look very small from the outside, but they're actually surprisingly spacious on the inside. The bedrooms are a decent size, the bathroom isn't any smaller than the one we have now (which I can only describe as fun-sized), and while the dining room and living room are smaller, I like their arrangement in relation to the kitchen a lot better. It's not quite as big as our current house, but it makes up for it with a substantial basement rec room. I think if we decided to move one of those, we would set the living room up as a library and do most of our actual living in the basement (it occurs to me that this would probably be very good for our utility bills).
