Unseemly bragging
Dec. 5th, 2007 09:39 pmI was giving K a bath last night, and on a whim, I handed her one of the foam letters floating around the tub and asked her what it was called. And she identified it corrently. And then she did the same for the next half a dozen or so letters I randomly handed her.
Egads. This certainly sheds new light on an incident from last week, that I hadn't been sure how to interpret. K had been coloring and got my attention by pointing to the paper and saying "E! E!" And what she was pointing to was something that looked quite a bit like an E.* Then she drew a rough oval shape and said "O! O!"
At the time, I wasn't sure if it was just coincidence or if she was really writing letters to the best of her ability. But given last night, I guess it was real. It's not that unusual for a two-year-old to recognize letters, so while I'm happy that I clearly have a smart child, I'm not dumbfounded by it. But the fact that she has the fine motor skills to write two letters, however awkwardly? Absolutely blows me away.
*Actually, it looked most like an Eta. Hey, my toddler knows Greek!
