Last night at our weekly anime night, we watched Yakitate Japan, a wonderful little series about competitive breadmaking. It features a hero who has special "solar hands" which means that they're extra warm and therefore has a special talent for making bread. I'm pretty sure it's meant to be something of a parody of sports anime, but it stands up well on its own.

I want to make bread now.

I also want to make bread because I recently read the bread chapter from Shirley Corriher's magnificent book on cooking (which is interesting from a classification standpoint - she has a chapter on fat, which means that interspersed with the beef and chicken recipes is an ice cream recipe. Incidentally, did you know you can make ice cream with non-fat sour cream?) and reading it really whet my appetite for breadmaking. The last time I made bread was the day before K was born when I had an unexpected burst of energy (nesting, anyone?). I miss it.

I received a phone call this week which started out with a pre-recorded voice saying, "To learn about a great church in your area, press one."

I hung up at that point, thinking some very non-Christian thoughts. But I kind of wish now that I had listened a little longer for a few reasons. One is that I would have liked to know who was doing it. Because while Indiana's No-Call law does allow tax-exempt charities to make calls, I'm pretty sure automatic calling machines don't fall under the definition of "volunteer or paid employee of the organization."

And I'm just curious now to know what that was really about. Because while I understand why certain marketers use pre-recorded messages (the cost-savings offset the drastic reduction in sales and everyone already hates them), I'd like to know a little bit about the church that is apparently so stupid that it's trying to attract people by using two things that most people hate: pre-recorded marketing calls and menu systems. Mostly so I can avoid it.

A mere 17 months after serving on my last jury, guess what I got today? Yes, the lovely potential juror questionnaire. For US District Court. In South Bend. Two hours away from here.

So let's see: a trial that almost certainly will last a while, far enough away from home that I'll probably have to stay in a hotel. And oh yes, I'm breastfeeding an infant who can't drink standard formula. Oh my, words can't express my feelings of delight on this subject.

Fortunately, the form had potential reasons for deferral, which included "Have served on a jury in the last two years" and "Have care of a child under 14 years of age whose health or safety will be compromised by my absence." Check and check! And if somehow those don't get me dismissed, I hope they enjoy giving me a 20 minutes recess every three hours to pump.
